Muscle tissue is the most metabolically active tissue in the body, so the more you have of it compared to fat tissue the more active your metabolism will be, in turn burning more fat and calories.

Pilates for weight loss works then because it not only builds lean muscle tissue through the anaerobic type strengthening and stretching exercises, but it also builds the muscles that improve your posture making you look taller and leaner.

Frequency: A weight workout for weight loss should be every other day, making sure not to overload the same muscle groups two days in a row.

Overload: The resistance needs to be challenging, with Pilates the reps are between 6-8 times, challenging the whole body with each exercise instead of isolating muscle groups like a traditional weight workout. Functional exercises challenge the muscles that prepare you for activities of daily life.

Moderate Aerobic Exercise:

Eat the Right Foods:

Starving yourself or cutting out certain food groups from your diet impedes your metabolism from working efficiently.

Think of your metabolism as a fire you have to stoke it often to make it work, which means you have to feed it the right stuff and often if you want it to continue to work properly.

Small, healthy meals eaten every 3-4 hours is recommended throughout the day. Start with breakfast right away to wake your metabolism up. Combine in every meal a lean protein (fish, chicken, beans, nuts, lean beef), a starchy carb (sweet potato, whole grain bread, English muffin), and a fibrous carb (fruit or vegetable) of equal portions.

Raw foods such as fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, cereals are thermic in nature, meaning they take energy to digest. If you are looking to lose weight then the best way would be to fill up on raw foods so the metabolism has to burn extra calories to metabolize or digest these foods.

How Organic Is Your Baby?

So just what does organic mean for babies? There was a report done by a working environmental group that showed results including findings of a significant amount of toxic chemicals are found in the blood of new borns.

The American Red Cross ran a series of blood tests on 10 umbilical-cord samples and their findings included 287 contaminants in the blood samples. Of the 287 found in the blood, 180 of the contaminants cause cancer in humans and animals, 217 of them cause damage to the brain and nervous system. 208 of the toxic chemicals caused abnormalities and birth defects on animals tested. Included in the contaminants were mercury, fire retardants, pesticides, plastic and other noted toxic contaminants.

Murder, Policies and Procedures

On a recent Sunday, the Philadelphia Inquirer shocked our local community by stating the obvious: "Even after the carnage at an Amish school in Lancaster County last week, a spot check by Inquirer reporters found a surprising number of security lapses at schools across the region. In spite of rules aimed at limiting public access, reporters who fanned out on a single day walked into more than a dozen schools unannounced and without being challenged." Many people think that security is the security manager's issue. However, on a recent blog post, I stated: "You can't rely on your employees and consultants to use common sense when it comes to your company's security. Remember to continually communicate the boundaries of permission to remind everyone that safety and security are team issues."

In the case of the school security breaches, well-meaning teachers and students, as well as hapless employees and contractors, provided unauthorized and unsupervised access. Luckily, the intruders were reporters; there were no casualties other than reputations and peace of mind.

In order to understand why this security lapse is particularly astonishing at this time, here is the background for those who don't live in Pennsylvania and may not know: A gunman had recently invaded a one room Amish schoolhouse, killing 5, severely injuring 5, and traumatizing the whole community. Subsequently, the often repeated message has been, if this can happen at that one room schoolhouse in the middle of the countryside in a peace-loving community, it can happen anywhere. We should step up efforts to keep our kids safe because of the high likelihood of copycat crimes.

These security lapses occurred at a time of heightened security. If a murderer had come sneaking in the side door, the consequences would have been very deadly. While most of us don't have to worry quite this much about our policies and procedures, it made me stop and think.

There were policies in place at all of the schools. Some of the policies were better than others, but each had security policies. When questioned, school authorities stated that there were policies that were not followed. For some reason, it seemed as though some felt that this settled everything, though I was left with many questions:

* Are the procedures written in light of actual practices/are they practical?
* Who is responsible for verifying that policies and procedures are followed?
* How is accountability ensured?
* What is the personal consequence of causing a security breach?
* How are the policies and procedures communicated, and how can we be sure that the involved parties understand them?
* What are you doing to make sure that these kids are safe, both now and in the future?
* How are updates communicated?

You can use these questions to consider the effectiveness of the security policies and procedures for your business as well. (There are many kinds of policies and procedures; this discussion focuses on security.) Many people view policies and procedures as an unpleasant set of paperwork that is at times needed for regulatory or legal reasons. However, policies and procedures should be meaningful roadmaps to better business practices.

In the case of security, the documents are "organic". The procedures will change with advances in technology, or changes in criminal behavior. Policies and procedures are purposeful; when it comes to security, following policies and procedures should prevent or limit loss. However, misunderstandings can instead cause confusion and create risk.

The good news: There are many things that you can do to create a framework for success and thwart would-be crimes; put your documentation to work! You can use the following suggestions to ensure that your policies and procedures aren't just sitting in a drawer collecting dust.

If you don't have policies and procedures in place, begin with your most pressing concerns. You can update documents later as needed, but it's important to gain and keep momentum or the project will stall. Once the writing begins, you will immediately find gaps and broken processes that need to be addressed. If a manager is doing the writing, he or she is likely to have starts and stops as attention is given to management issues. This can be frustrating.

Many managers enjoy outsourcing the work to a writer so that they can fix processes quickly without affecting the project schedule. Most technical writers offer free estimates and are happy to discuss your project with you. You may also request quotes from more than one company to comparison shop.

Create a communication plan. For instance, send out a section per week for review instead of one overwhelmingly large document, and meet later in the week to discuss that section.

Make information relevant. The best way to do this is for the manager to write a follow-up note or lead a discussion regarding the manager's specific concerns with the team. For example, "Procedure 3.1 states that company laptops must be secure, but it doesn't elaborate. As part of the sales force, your laptop travels with you and security is really essential here. These are the types of things that I feel are necessary to improve physical security, as well as data security" In this way, the employees are relating the procedures to their own personal experiences and situations.

Cover all your bases. Make sure that there is a system in place to thoroughly disseminate the information. In this case, schools needed to communicate with teachers, other employees, students, parents, and contractors. When you need to educate a broad audience, you must have a plan. Don't assume that people will pick up the information by osmosis.

Reinforce the information. Using training classes, online quizzes, and class discussions reinforces the concepts and gives people a chance to apply their new knowledge. Providing employees with job aids, such as quick reference cards, will also help them to gain proficiency.

Allow for input. Hold employee roundtable discussions or encourage employees to provide input to the managers. In many respects, employees are your first line of defense against disaster.

Establish accountability. If a person knows that there will be random security checks, he/she will be much more likely to self-check. It's human nature. Along the same lines, managers who create a compliance audit plan are more likely to follow up than those who do not.

Apply the rules to everyone. I have heard it said that managers who feel that the rules don't apply to them create the biggest risk to corporate IT security. In fact, the clearance held by top executives means that they are the greatest risk, and they should probably be even more careful (not less).

Be ready to take action. Treat security breaches with speed and commitment. You don't want to be overly punitive, but you also don't want to be a haven for scofflaws that aren't working with the rest of the company to keep everyone safe. More than likely, if you are prepared to follow through with those who are breaking policies, you won't have to.

Review your business practices at the slowest time in your annual sales cycle. The mere existence of this set of documents does not automatically improve practices. Policies and procedures only work if they are accurate, relevant, and known.

When teams work together, crimes are prevented. Well-written policies and procedures bring unity and understanding, keeping people and possessions safe. When security is breached in spite of the efforts, a well-thought out backup plan will ensure that the problem is resolved as quickly and as painlessly as possible. Far from being a distraction, when written with respect and participation, the development and implementation of policies and procedures has a positive effect on job performance, safety, and productivity.

Container Gardening Should Include The Herbal Plant Scented Geraniums

Planting an herbal garden that includes scented geraniums is not common to container gardening. Most gardeners think of scented geraniums as a floral plant, not an herbal plant but the species, called pelargonium, is an herb with many uses. This delightful herb has many different aromas and gorgeous colors to delight your senses. The scented geranium is best used in container gardening for two reasons. One, you can control the soil and moisture, and two you can bring it indoors when a frost is imminent.

The scented geranium was found in Africa in the 1600's and shipped to England where it became most popular. The gardener of King Charles I grew a variety of scented geraniums in the royal greenhouse. The Victorians thought they were geraniums rather than an herbal plant but if you look at their asymmetrical leaves you can see the difference between scented geraniums and regular geraniums.

The scented geranium is truly a herbal plant for all seasons. It grows and has a lovely aroma throughout the spring and summer and when the chilly winds of autumn threaten this sturdy herbal plant will gladly co-exist inside with you. Nothing could be better when container gardening includes scented geranium with their exquisite flowers, lovely scented leaves, and sturdy characteristics for year round enjoyment of your senses.

True to their name scented geraniums come in a multitude of fragrances. Seemly, the favorite is the rose scented geranium but others are gaining popularity quickly. Some of the more robustly planted are the apple scented, peppermint scented, wood, like cedar or balsam, nutmeg and citronella (also know as the mosquito buster.) You can plant a whole container garden with this one type of plant and have a beautiful diversity. Their leaves alone will contrast interestingly to give you a spectacular container garden. The tiny smooth leaves of the nutmeg scented geranium, or Lady Mary, to the large musk scented leaves of the Lady Plymouth.

The rose scented geraniums are gaining popularity for calming and are increasingly used in mediation and for healing purposes. The plant truly releases a delicious rose scent when rubbed against or crushed. Just brush the leaves to release their scent or make a soothing rose geranium tea to help you relax.

There are many culinary uses for the scented geranium to delight your taste buds. Chop up the leaves and mix with your other favorite herbs such as chives or chervil or thyme to make interesting flavored butters or dips and spreads. A really clever way to use the leaves is to line a baking pan when making pies, puddings or cakes to impart a wonderful flavor to your desserts. Use them for desserts, syrups or custards for another unique flavor. You can even make flavored sugar by layer dry, fresh leaves with sugar. Let them sit a few days, remove the leaves and store the sugar in an air tight container. This can be used in teas, baking goods, or as a sugar scrub. They are delightful in baths and infused in water to rinse your hair.

The scented geranium is a great as a room freshener or added to potpourri. Try adding some to your vacuum bag or put them in a mesh bag and add them to your dryer for a new fresh scent for your clothes.

Scented geraniums are grown from cuttings taken from the mother plant. Cut three to four inches just above a leaf. Strip the lower leaves off and place in a rooting medium, such as a mix of sphagnum peat moss. Place your cutting in bright light and keep it moist. When roots have been established it is time to place it in your container garden. Make sure the soil is porous and fast draining.

When the scented geranium is indoors it is necessary to feed it once a week to ensure full leaf growth. Pinching back the plant not only encourages bushy growth but releases a delicious aroma into the air. Keep the soil evenly damp; do not over water them as this will kill them. They can come back from overly dry situations but not wet ones.

Now it is time to add this multi-talented plant to your container garden. Just one word of caution, once you get to know the scented geranium your herbal garden will never be without it.

These activities are analyzed in relation to the impact on patient care, safety and client settings where they are performed. It is in this framework that NCLEX test questions are designed to be applicable in real world settings, thus requiring graduate nurses to be knowledgeable of such practices.

The second step in the NCLEX test plan is to develop a method to test behaviors regarding the content formed in step one. The NCLEX-RN, Test Plan, provides a focused summary of the concepts to be tested. It serves not only to delineate what content to cover and the method of presenting the test questions but also serves to assist in developing a study guide in preparing those who will take the test. The NCLEX assesses the graduate nurses knowledge of required skills to practice nursing safely and competently.

Beliefs about people and nursing underlie the NCLEX-RN test plan. People are finite beings with varying capacities to function in society. (2) Each person is a unique and special individual existing in a system that they exert some control over, such as their beliefs, social systems, family systems, health customs. It is in this underlying theory of each individuals beliefs that the nursing process guides in the intervention to promote psychological and physical wellness.

Video games have been around for more years than most people know. Most people today can remember the Pac-Man, Pac-Woman era. In reality video games have been in our daily lives for far longer than that. The 70s brought about new developments in the video industry. In 1972 a patent was granted for the release of a home video console. In was large and bulky, but it satisfied the video game demands of the gaming public. Later, in the 70s and early 80s, along came the development and release of Atari. This lasted for only a few short years, when the video market took a big dive. The reason for this was that there were so many entities producing these video games (most of which were the same game) that the market became flooded. The industry had really gone stale, because how many versions of the same video game can there be. One just seemed to be an updated version of the other. The public became bored with this and needed something fresh and new.

In 1989 the market once again had a new video game gadget, Nintendo Game Boy. This was new and exciting and the games were different, challenging and, best of all, you could take it with you wherever you went. If you're like me, and you're a big fan of a sports team, you'll know exactly what it's like. When I'm watching the Atlanta Falcons play, its much more than just a game. When I sit down in the stadium or infront of the TV, I know I'm part of the team, I'm part of something bigger. You'll know yourself. You can feel it in your bones: every yard lost or gained, every result or near miss, you can feel in your blood because your team means so much. And if you're like me and you're a die-hard supporter, you'll know you just can't stop thinking about it.

I bought Falcons wallpaper for my house, I own several different jerseys, and I even have Falcons wallpaper on my computer desktop. You either feel it, or you don't, but if you do, you'll know you have to show your loyal and faithful support at all times.

It was my wife who caused the problems with my wallpaper. She outright objected when I bought it a couple of years ago, as she was the one responsible for the decor in the house. OK, so she had good taste, and she wasn't the type to go for flowers and old-lady patterns. She was more into pastille colors with abstract prints and paintings to complement. But with the Falcons paper, I wanted to show my passion and love for the team. I only wanted to put it in the one room, where I watched most of the games. Eventually, after realizing I was determined and that I wasn't going to submit she let me keep it so long as I promised not to paper any other rooms with it again. Defragging Drive May Work Best When Starting in Safe Mode

"When attempting to defrag the C drive on my 333 E Machines PC using Windows 98 OS 6.1 edition, the first message I get is Reading Drive Information. Defrag begins but will not go beyond 10 percent completion. Next a blank screen appears, th. This sequence recurs every 3 to 4 minutes."

What youre experiencing is conflict/contention with another open program. When the defrag utility runs, it copies information (data, programs or files) from one area of your hard disk to a clean area. If a program is open or a file is being accessed by another program, the defrag utility will not copy it to the clean area. These programs probably are part of your startup process. For example, my startup process automatically opens my virus scan program so that when I get on the Internet Im protected. If I want to run my defrag utility, I need to start my computer in safe mode.

Safe mode is a scaled down version of your Windows operating system and will bypass your startup process so that programs that are automatically turned on will not be initiated. Youll notice a difference right away because your Windows desktop will look different and your icons will appear larger than normal. This is because the default screen resolution is larger than your normal settings.

For those who arent familiar with the defrag utility, let me take a few minutes to explain what what exactly it is. There are two programs you should run on a regular basis, which should be part of your disk maintenance program. These programs are disk defragmenter and scandisk.

I run my disk defrag once a quarter and my scandisk once a month. The disk defrag utility cleans up your hard disk to make it more efficient. Let me explain how your hard disk works and why it needs to be cleaned up periodically.

Im writing my column using MS Word. When I open the file for my current column, I like to save it after 5-10 minutes of typing. When I save it, the Word document cant be saved over the same spot on my hard disk. Therefore, a new spot on the hard disk must be found and the pointer (index) must be updated to reflect the new location. Sometimes, if the file is very large (novel or screen play), there isnt enough clean space in one location so the file is broken up into several locations with several pointers. The old space is now unusable until the next defrag utility is run.

Sometimes, youll notice that your computer takes a long time to save a document because it is hunting around for some clean space. This is probably the No. 1 problem associated with computer performance. The defrag utility starts by copying all the files from the beginning of your hard disk to another location. Then it cleans the disk area and copies the current files back. It continues with each area/sector or your hard disk until it cleans the entire disk. This process can take up to eight hours, depending upon the size of your hard disk and the computers speed.

The next utility is called the scandisk. It resembles the defrag utility, but it updates only the pointer/index files. Every time a file is updated, the new location is updated in your index file. These files are the most active files on your computer because it tracks the location of everything. The scandisk also eliminates any corruption problems that have occurred when shutting down your computer improperly or when your computer hangs.

A well-maintained index also will increase the speed and efficiency of your computer.

Prevent ingrown hairs by avoiding repeat strokes over the same area. Repeated strokes can also result in hair being cut too short.

Shave with the skin in a relaxed condition. Do not stretch the skin too taught. A little pressure may be necessary but excessive stretching can again result in hair being cut too short.

Use Tea Tree Oil twice a day in conjunction with a loofah bath or shower. Tea Tree Oil has a bacterial ability to kill infection and prevent pustules forming. (Avoid the eye area)

When Waxing

To pull out the hair cleanly without breaking it follow these recommendations: Apply a thin layer of wax in the direction of the hair growth, preferably holding the spatula or tongue depresser at a 45 degree angle as you spread the wax.

When applying the cotton strip over the wax, rub in the same direction as the hair growth leaving about 1/3 of the strip free to allow for a firm grip for a fast back pulling action.

Pull the skin taut before pulling the cotton strip away.

Pull back with a rapid movement close to the skin. Do not pull up or out, rather pull back.

One fast, smooth, pull back is much more effective than a series of light pulls which only increase the pain and leave patchy areas.

After 24-48 hours exfoliate the skin (with a Loofah sponge for example) to prevent the dead skin from accumulating in areas that can become ingrown such as the bikini line, upper thighs, underarms and calves.

Prevent ingrown hairs by not wearing tight clothing over freshly waxed areas to minimize the risk of irritation and ingrown hairs.
